Wildfire Resilient Communities

Wildfire Resilient Sonoma County

Permit Sonoma received FEMA’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) grant to fund the Wildfire Resilient Communities project. This effort will build on existing wildfire mitigation work developed through the Sonoma County Wildfire Adapted Program and the Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project and expand the County’s ability to address fire risk in both developed and natural landscapes.

What’s the Goal?

The initiative is designed to enhance community-level wildfire resilience. It includes a range of activities that aim to reduce wildfire risk from the home outward and the landscape inward. These efforts will involve both individual properties and broader community-level planning and action. Participation will be encouraged across project areas to strengthen collective impact. This project aims to

  • foster generational change through community wide education, action, and support
  • promote wildfire awareness, especially information about structural ignitability and defensible space in at-risk communities across the county
  • identify best practices that can be scaled saving valuable taxpayer dollars, human lives, and personal property

Scope of Work

The project involves targeted assessments and on-the-ground treatments in pre-defined areas of the county. Activities include evaluating properties for defensible space and structural vulnerability, identifying priority sites for large scale vegetation management, and offering support to help residents take action. While the focus is on specific regions, the goal is to apply lessons learned and successful strategies more broadly over time.

Project Areas

Initial efforts will concentrate on three priority regions identified during the grant application process. These areas were selected based on a variety of factors and will serve as the first phase of implementation. Work is limited to these locations and must align with established project goals. The selected communities are Penngrove/Rancho Adobe, Larkfield/Wikiup, and Lower Russian River (Guerneville).
