Special Events are one-time, annual, or recurring events using public property, streets, sidewalks, alleys and parking areas beyond the normal pattern of use. This also includes events on private property beyond the zoned use of that property.

Special Event Permits and Requirements

Depending on the nature of your event, you may need to obtain permits or approvals to ensure a well-planned, safe event. Events like the ones listed below may require permits. Visit our Special Event Permitting page to determine which permits may be required for your event, including encroachment, zoning, food, fireworks & special effects, tents, vendor & cooking booths, and wastewater disposal.

  • Agriculture Promotion & Winery Events (Tastings, tours, etc.)
  • Athletic Events (e.g.: Walkathons, runs, marathons, trail rides, bicycle races, rodeos, triathlons)

Note: Cannabis events such as tastings and tours are not allowed in unincorporated Sonoma County.
