Judge extends order allowing Sonoma County to issue non-emergency well permits
SONOMA COUNTY | March 04, 2025
Permit Sonoma can continue issuing non-emergency well permits until at least March 27. A Sonoma County Superior Court judge recently signed an order to extend a pause on an earlier directive that had temporarily stopped the County from issuing well permits.
On Dec. 17, the County was served with an order to stop issuing well permits stemming from the lawsuit Russian Riverkeeper and California Coastkeeper vs. County of Sonoma. Last month, a judge issued a temporary stay of that ruling, allowing the County to issue well permits under the amended ordinance that was challenged in the lawsuit.
“We welcome the judge’s decision to extend the stay and have staff working diligently to process applications as quickly as possible,” said Tennis Wick, Director of Permit Sonoma.
Permit Sonoma is currently accepting well permit applications, and customers are encouraged to submit completed applications as soon as possible. Well permits for sites that are out of water will be given priority per the usual process.
