Special Event Permits
Special Events are one-time, annual, or recurring events using public property, streets, sidewalks, alleys and parking areas beyond the normal pattern of use. This also includes events on private property beyond the zoned use of that property. Special events are permitted in all zoning districts. Depending on the nature of your event, you may need to obtain permits or approvals to ensure a well-planned, safe event.
Most special events in unincorporated Sonoma County are reviewed and approved through a single Special Events Permit. Some activities associated with an event may still require separate permits, including: temporary structure (building) permits, food permits, and community event organizer permits.
State Parks and County Regional Parks: Events held in State parks or County regional parks are not within Permit Sonoma’s jurisdiction. For State parks, apply for a Special Event Permit from the California Department of Parks and Recreation. For County regional parks, apply for a Special Use Permit from Sonoma County Regional Parks.
Updated Periodic Special Events Ordinance Effective June 9, 2026
On December 9, 2025, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors approved changes to the Zoning Code that updated Periodic Special Event regulations. The revisions clarify permitting requirements, term definitions, and public noticing procedures and are described in more detail below.
Periodic Special Events Zoning Code Update
As of June 9, 2026, the following updates to County Code Chapter 26 (Zoning Regulations) governing periodic special events will be in effect:
- The maximum number of allowed attendees for all periodic special events is 2,500. Events that occur both on private property and within the public right-of-way are not subject to the attendee cap of 2,500.
- Periodic special events held 30 or more days apart must obtain separate ministerial permits.
- Refer to events on private property as “periodic special events”.
The following updates reflect current practices for periodic special events:
- Periodic special events may occur no more than four times within a two-year period.
- Courtesy public notices are provided to neighbors of a proposed event site after ministerial permit issuance.
