Sonoma County opens Chipper Program early to reduce wildfire risk
SANTA ROSA, CA | May 08, 2026
Sonoma County has launched its free Residential Curbside Chipper Program for the 2026 season. This continues efforts to help residents reduce wildfire risk, improve defensible space, and enhance community safety.
Administered by the Permit Sonoma Fire Prevention Division, the program supports property owners in creating defensible space around their homes and reducing hazardous vegetation along key access routes. Eligible properties in unincorporated areas of Sonoma County may receive up to two hours of complimentary chipping service and are pre-approved for a second visit. Appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Creating defensible space is one of the most effective ways residents can protect their homes and neighborhoods from wildfire,” said Steve Mosiurchak, Sonoma County Fire Marshal. “Programs like this make it easier for residents to take meaningful action.”
Research and post-fire assessments continue to show that maintaining 100 feet or more of defensible space, combined with home hardening measures, significantly improves a home’s chances of surviving wildfire. Clearing and thinning vegetation along roadways also helps ensure safer, more efficient access for emergency responders and residents during evacuations.
The program has consistently served hundreds of properties across the county each year, from Cloverdale to Sonoma and Kenwood to Jenner. To serve as many properties as possible, it’s critical to review and follow program guidelines and prepare the wood piles accordingly. Failure to properly prepare may result in delayed service. Apply early to take advantage of available appointments.
