CNI-029 Inspection Requirements for Swimming Pools & Spas

Identify required inspections during the construction of a gunite or fiberglass swimming pool/spa.

Gunite Swimming Pools and Spas

  1. Pre-Gunite Inspection: A pre-gunite inspection is required when the pool has been excavated; steel reinforcement is in place and tied; the required bonding of electrical equipment/appliances is completed; rough electrical installation is completed; and plumbing pipes are in place and under test.
  2. Pre-Deck Inspection: A pre-deck inspection is required for all on grade pool decks. Accessibility: All pools, except for those associated with single family dwellings, shall be accessible per chapter 11B of the current California Building Code. The slope and cross slope of the pool deck shall not exceed 2%.
  3. Pre-Plaster Inspection: A pre-plaster inspection is required when the gunite has been completed; pool equipment/appliances have been installed, grounded and bonded and one of the required safety features has been installed in accordance with Sonoma County Code section 7-15.
  4. Final Inspection: The final inspection is required when the pool has been completed and all pool equipment/appliances and required GFI outlets have been installed. 

Fiberglass Swimming Pools and Spas

  1. Excavation Inspection: An excavation inspection is required after the excavation is complete and before the fiberglass pool is installed to verify soil conditions at the location of the pool. All gravel compaction/densification for equipment pads and at the hydrostatic relief valve will be verified at this time.
  2. Pre-Deck Inspection: A pre-deck inspection is required after all required bond beam reinforcing steel and concrete forms are in place at the pool edge. In addition, all electrical circuits shall be in place. Accessibility: All pools, except for those associated with single family dwellings, shall be accessible per chapter 11B of the current California Building Code. The slope and cross slope of the pool deck shall not exceed 2%.
  3. Final Inspection: A final inspection is required when the pool has been completed and all pool equipment/appliances and required GFI outlets have been installed.
